1st 3 episodes of 'The Chosen' Season 4 hit theaters

The first three episodes of Season Four of "The Chosen" debuted in theaters across the nation -- as well as in Canada and other parts of the globe -- on Thursday.

The show chronicles the life of Jesus Christ.

Get ready to cheer louder, laugh harder, and cry longer," the show noted on X, which is the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The show stars Jonathan Roumie as Christ, as well as a cast of actors who portray the 12 Apostles, The Blessed Mother, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, and more. The story, which is set in first-century Israel, is told through their eyes.

"I’m telling y’allstock up on Kleenex NOW. Such a beautiful family to be on this journey with!" Roumie wrote on X Jan. 18.

The latest season of the show will "throw you right into the deep end -- and the heavy stuff immediately begins rising to the surface," according to the show's Facebook page. "Private plots go public. Loyalties come into clear view. From John the Baptist's conflict with Herod to Jesus' collision-course with the authorities, there's no hiding anymore. It's all becoming stark. Black and white."

According to "The Chosen" website, the series will be shown in theaters in two to three groupings, with episodes 1, 2, and 3 released on Thursday. episodes 4, 5, and 6 will premiere on Feb. 15, and episodes 7 and 8 to debut on February 29.

"So everytime you go to the theater to see The Chosen, you’ll be getting multiple episodes," the website noted.

The show, which is slated to include seven seasons in total, is crowd-funded. Dallas Jenkins is the creator, director, and co-writer.

Jenkins spoke with Catholic News Agency about the decision to show the season in its entirety in theaters.

“I mean Season Four is on a bigger scale. The themes are deeper. The stories are bigger. The backdrop is bigger,” he told CNA. “We’re getting closer and closer to Jerusalem and to what we all know is coming. Also, we think people should gather. I think people should get together during a time that’s very divisive. If for no other reason then I think you’re gonna need to give each other handkerchiefs and Kleenex because it’s a heavy season.”
