After a disappointing Olympic debut in Paris and an early exit from the Canadian Open, World No. 2 Coco Gauff has arrived in Cincinnati to bid for her second title of the season in singles. She is set to face Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva to kickstart her campaign at the Cincinnati Open.
Unlike Gauff, Putintseva couldn’t play at the Olympics as she withdrew from the quadrennial event right before her first-round match due to a knee injury. The 29-year-old was scheduled to play at the Canadian Open against Dayana Yastremska but as she did not recover completely, she deemed it best not to feature in the event. Her first match, since recovering from the injury was against Qualifier Harriet Dart at the Cincinnati Open.
Yulia Putintseva, who is unseeded in the tournament, defeated Harriet Dart in three sets before setting up the clash with Coco Gauff in the Round of 32. This season, the World No. 34 has won just one title, at the Birmingham Classic by beating Ajla Tomljanovic in the final.
As mentioned already, second seed Gauff, who was defeated in the third round at the Olympics, has also lifted just one title in singles, which she won earlier this year at the ASB Classic by defeating Elina Svitolina. It was also Gauff’s first title on the hard court.
Coco Gauff will enter the match as the favorite, given that she has a decent record on hard courts. She is also the reigning US Open champion.
The 20-year-old has dominated over Yulia Putintseva in the three matches they played against each other on the WTA Tour and so leads 3-0 in their head-to-head meetings. Their first encounter was at the 2021 Rome Open, followed by the 2022 Madrid Open, and the 2023 Rome Open. Gauff registered her first two wins over the Kazakhstani in three sets.
Match Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in straight sets
