World No.1 Jannik Sinner is still chasing his first title since the Halle Open victory. He reached the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open after two back-to-back quarterfinal defeats at the Wimbledon and Canadian Open.
It’s not going to be easy for him in the semifinals as his match is against a strong opponent. Third seed Alexander Zverev, who last month reached the final of the German Open, will be locking horns with the Italian on Sunday (August 18).
Jannik Sinner directly played the Round of 32 and secured an easy win before Jordan Thompson gave him the walkover in the fourth round. He survived a scare against Andrey Rublev, whom the 23-year-old beat in three sets en route to the last four.
Alexander Zverev, on the other hand, knocked out Karen Khachanov easily in his opening match in the Round of 32 but had to toil hard in the next two rounds against Pablo Carreno Busta and Ben Shelton. After overcoming them, Zverev reached the semifinals of an ATP event for the eighth time this season.
Jannik Sinner has won four titles this season. After clinching his first major trophy at the Australian Open, the first seed went on to lift the ATP Rotterdam, Miami Open, and the Halle Open. His performance on the hard courts this season has been nothing short of impressive.
Alexander Zverev has come close to lifting trophies several times but was successful just once. He won the Rome Open with a straight-set victory over Nicolas Jarry. Zverev’s best performance came at the French Open when he reached the final and gave a tough competition to Carlos Alcaraz, who came out on top in five sets.
Though Sinner has enjoyed a great deal of success this season, he has won just one match against Zverev in their five meetings. They, however, have not clashed this season, as their previous encounter was in the fourth round of the 2023 US Open, which the World No.4 from Germany won.
The only time Sinner secured the win was in their first meeting at the 2020 French Open. Zverev also leads 3-0 in their clashes on hard courts.
Match Prediction: Alexander Zverev in three sets.
