Two bills in legislature draw Protect Trans Youth rally to Idaho Capital

Add The Words Idaho and a collective of organizations met at the Idaho Capital for a "protect trans youth" rally. The rally is in response to legislation making its way through the statehouse currently HB71 which would ban sex reassignment therapy, puberty blockers, and hormone therapies for children under the age of 18.

Another bill that has caught the attention of trans activists in Idaho is SB1100, a bill that would require schools to have separate bathrooms and changing rooms for kids based on biological sex. The bill has drawn criticism from opponents because it allows for students to sue the school for $5,000 if they encounter a trans student in the bathroom."This bill forces trans youth to choose between violating their sense of very self or facing punishment. It allows students to sue a school for $5,000 if they encounter a trans student in a bathroom, which will in turn force educators and coaches to police whether a student is trans or not," says Chelsea Caona- Lincoln who is in opposition to the bill.

Speakers at the rally included political strategists for ACLU Idaho, Doctors, and others giving personal testimony about how these bills if passed, could affect their lives and the lives of their patients and families.

Both bills' next stop is the Senate.
